About This Temple

The principal centre of all Vettakkorumakan deities in Kerala, situated within the ancient ruins of Balussery Kotta (Fort), approximately 25 km from Kozhikode. Famous for the Pantheerayiram Thengayeru — the continuous rhythmic breaking of 12,000 coconuts — during the Dhanu month festival.

History

Balussery Kota Sree Vettakkorumakan Temple is an ancient shrine situated within the ruins of Balussery Kotta in Kozhikode district.

The temple is considered the prime center of all Vettakkorumakan deities across Kerala — the Arudasthanam from which the deity's sacred presence has radiated outward to hundreds of shrines across North and Central Kerala.

The ceiling and walls of the inner sanctum are decorated with ancient mural paintings, including the celebrated Ananthashayanam — Lord Vishnu in reclining posture — among other sacred depictions.

The annual festival in the Malayalam month of Dhanu features the remarkable Pantheerayiram Thengayeru ritual, in which 12,000 coconuts are broken continuously in a rhythmic ceremonial sequence, drawing devotees from across the region.
