History
Shri Chekipara Bhagwati Prasanna Valiapura Tharavad is an ancestral home of the Theeyar community that has maintained its sacred deity tradition across generations. The presiding deity, Chekipara Bhagavathy, is a powerful mother goddess venerated as the divine ancestor and protector of the family lineage — one of many local Bhagavathy manifestations that characterise the goddess worship traditions of the Theeyar and related coastal communities of North Malabar.
The five theyyam forms performed here — Eramath Chamundi, Raktha Chamundi, Achan Theyyam, Chekipara Bhagavathy, and Vishnumoorthy — represent a layered assembly of protective and fierce divine presences. Eramath Chamundi and Raktha Chamundi are fiery manifestations of the mother goddess associated with blood sacrifice and cosmic protection, while Achan Theyyam represents an ancestral male deity figure. Vishnumoorthy stands as the supreme protector of the community.
The three-year cycle of May performances at this tharavadu coincides with the closing of the Edavam month — a time when communities across North Malabar seek divine protection and blessings before the monsoon season begins, making this one of a cluster of interconnected triennial celebrations in the region.
Rituals
- Kalamezhuthu: Sacred floor art created with natural colors before the Theyyam performance, invoking the deities' presence.
- Coconut & Flower Offerings: Traditional offerings of fresh coconuts, banana leaves, and seasonal flowers presented to seek divine blessings.
- Sacred Fire Ritual: Ancient fire ceremonies conducted to purify the space and create the sacred atmosphere for divine manifestation.
- Ancestral Prayers: Special prayers offered to honor the ancestors and invite their blessings for the community's wellbeing.
