About This Temple
One of the oldest and most sacred temples of North Kerala, known as the mother of all Bhadrakali temples in the region. Believed to have been the coronation ceremony centre of the Mooshika kingdom, and associated with Parashurama's creation of Madayippara. Performs the annual Maaritheyyam on the 16th of Karkidakam, a rare ritual by the Pulaya community.
History
Madayi Kavu, formally known as Sree Thiruvarkadu Bhagavathy Temple, is one of the oldest temples in North Kerala and is revered as the mother of all Bhadrakali temples in the region.
The temple is believed to have served as the coronation ceremony centre of the ancient Mooshika kingdom. Local tradition holds that Parashurama created both Madayippara (the laterite plateau) and the holy shrine upon it.
During Hyder Ali's incursion into Malabar around 1780, the temple was desecrated. A local Nair warrior named Vengayil Chathukutty beheaded the person responsible for the desecration, earning the title of Nayanar for his family — a legacy that endures in the temple's oral history.
Temple rites are performed by Pidarar Brahmins following the Koula sampradaya. The unique Kozhi Kalasham — a poultry sacrifice held in high esteem — is among the temple's distinctive rituals.
Eight Theyyams are built outside the perimeter of the kavu on the day of the Kalasam, preserving the sacred character of the grove.
Rituals
- Maaritheyyam: Performed on Karkidakam 16 (August) by the Pulaya community. Six forms are enacted: Maari Kaliyan, Mamaaya Kaliyan, Maari Kalichi, Mamaaya Kalichi, Maari Kuliyan, and Mamaaya Kuliyan.
- Kozhi Kalasham: A distinctive ritual sacrifice of poultry held in high regard at Madayi Kavu, unique within the Koula sampradaya tradition.
- Kalasam: Annual Kalasam ceremony outside the kavu perimeter, during which eight Theyyams are performed.
