History
Thenguthara Tharavadu is a traditional ancestral home that has maintained its own family deity shrine across generations, a practice central to the tharavadu system of North Kerala. The home hosts five distinct Theyyam forms performed over two days in the month of Kumbham.
The deities honoured here include Bhootham, a primordial earth spirit; Madayil Chamundi, the fierce mother goddess who descended into the netherworld to vanquish the demons Chanda and Munda; and Bhagavathy, the supreme mother goddess of Kerala. Vishnumoorthy, one of the most prominent theyyam deities of North Malabar associated with divine protection of communities, and Veliye Mudi, a warrior deity, complete the sacred ensemble.
In the tharavadu tradition, the family's lineage is inseparably tied to the worship of these deities, who are believed to protect the ancestral home and its descendants. The Theyyam performances here reinforce the bonds between the living and their ancestors, and between the human and divine realms.
Rituals
- Kalamezhuthu: Sacred floor art created with natural colors before the Theyyam performance, invoking the deities' presence.
- Coconut & Flower Offerings: Traditional offerings of fresh coconuts, banana leaves, and seasonal flowers presented to seek divine blessings.
- Sacred Fire Ritual: Ancient fire ceremonies conducted to purify the space and create the sacred atmosphere for divine manifestation.
- Ancestral Prayers: Special prayers offered to honor the ancestors and invite their blessings for the community's wellbeing.

- Photography and videography restricted during active Theyyam performances
- Arrive early (by 6 AM) for the complete experience and best viewing spots
