History

Valliyath Tharavadu is a traditional Shaliar community ancestral home that hosts one of the most extensive theyyam ensembles in the region — nine distinct deity forms performed over two days in the Edavam season. The Shaliar community, one of the traditional weaver and artisan communities of North Kerala, has maintained this rich ritual tradition as a core expression of family and community identity.

The ensemble here spans a remarkable breadth: Padaveeran, a warrior hero deity; Angakulangara Bhagavathy and Vellarkulangara Bhagavathy, goddesses associated with sacred ponds and water boundaries; Moovalamkuzhi Chamundi, a fierce manifestation of the goddess venerated in the mango-grove tradition; Vishnumoorthy, the great protector; Chuliyar Bhagavathy and Thirvakat Bhagavathy, local goddess forms rooted in specific sacred sites; Vadakan Gulikan, the northern guardian of cosmic justice; and Sri Rudranda Bhagavathy, a fierce Shaivite goddess form.

The two-day May performances at Valliyath Tharavadu create a remarkable ritual event where nine divine presences manifest in sequence — each requiring its own elaborate preparation, costume, and ritual songs (Thottam Pattu) — making this a sustained ceremonial gathering that draws the extended family and community together once every three years for a renewal of their collective sacred covenant.

Rituals

• Kalamezhuthu: Sacred floor art created with natural colors before the Theyyam performance, invoking the deities' presence.
• Coconut & Flower Offerings: Traditional offerings of fresh coconuts, banana leaves, and seasonal flowers presented to seek divine blessings.
• Sacred Fire Ritual: Ancient fire ceremonies conducted to purify the space and create the sacred atmosphere for divine manifestation.
• Ancestral Prayers: Special prayers offered to honor the ancestors and invite their blessings for the community's wellbeing.

• Dress modestly and traditionally - dhoti/mundu for men, saree/churidar for women
• Photography and videography restricted during active Theyyam performances
