History

Sree Vaniyillam Someswary Temple is an ancient place of worship belonging to the Theeyar community of North Malabar. Someswary — meaning 'she whose lord is Soma (the Moon)', an epithet of the goddess as consort of Shiva — is venerated here in a tradition that weaves together Shakta and Shaiva currents running deep in North Kerala's ritual landscape.

The temple hosts eight Theyyam forms performed in a grand triennial cycle — Padaveeran, Raktha Chamundi, Angakulangara Bhagavathy, Kaatumoorthya, Thorakar, Vettakkorumakan, Karim Chamundi, and Vishnumoorthy. This ensemble spans warrior deities, fierce mother goddesses, forest guardians, and divine protectors, reflecting the inclusive and layered nature of North Malabar's folk religion. The Theeyar community, a traditional landowning and seafaring caste of the Malabar coast, has maintained the ritual ownership and ceremonial calendar of this temple across generations.

The three-day May performances draw worshippers from across the region, with the atmosphere building over successive nights as each deity manifests in turn. The consecutive nights of Theyyam in Edavam (May) place this celebration at the cusp of the Malayalam seasons, when the community seeks divine protection and agricultural blessings before the monsoon descends.

• Kalamezhuthu: Sacred floor art created with natural colors before the Theyyam performance, invoking the deities' presence.
• Coconut & Flower Offerings: Traditional offerings of fresh coconuts, banana leaves, and seasonal flowers presented to seek divine blessings.
• Sacred Fire Ritual: Ancient fire ceremonies conducted to purify the space and create the sacred atmosphere for divine manifestation.
• Ancestral Prayers: Special prayers offered to honor the ancestors and invite their blessings for the community's wellbeing.
