History

Vazhakodan Veed is a traditional family home whose sole presiding deity is Vadakan Gulikan — the northern form of Gulikan, one of the most widely venerated spirit guardians of North Malabar. According to the myth, Gulikan was born from the tip of Lord Shiva's left toe, immediately charged with the sacred and terrible task of overseeing life, death, and cosmic justice. He is an aspect of Yama, the god of death, but understood in the folk tradition not as mere destroyer but as the enforcer of dharmic order — punishing wrongdoing and protecting the righteous.

Vadakan Gulikan (the northern Gulikan) is one of several regional variants — alongside Thekkan (southern), Marana, and Kara Gulikan — each with distinct ritual characteristics tied to their geographic traditions. At Vazhakodan Veed, Gulikan's worship is uniquely flexible: recorded as performable 'anytime', the veedu maintains the capacity to invoke its guardian deity whenever the household or community requires divine intervention, not only on fixed festival dates.

This flexibility reflects an important dimension of the Theyyam tradition: the deity belongs to the family and can be called upon in times of crisis, illness, or dispute — not only during scheduled celebrations. The Malayan and related communities who perform Gulikan carry forward one of the most primal and uninterrupted strands of North Malabar's ritual life.
