Achan Theyyam is traditionally performed as the manifestation of an ancestral figure belonging to a particular family or tharavadu. Each tharavadu may have its own unique mozhi (oral traditions, sayings, or narratives) associated with the Theyyam. Achan Theyyam is generally believed to represent a revered ancestor who, after death, attained a divine status through the blessings of the gods.

The ancestor portrayed through Achan Theyyam is often remembered as an exceptional individual—typically the eldest member (karnavar) of the family or someone who made significant contributions to the community.
