Kandhakarnan Theyyam (കണ്ഠകർണൻ തെയ്യം) is associated with Lord Shiva (ശിവൻ) and is regarded as one of his divine attendants (Bhoothaganas – ഭൂതഗണങ്ങൾ). The Aitihyam of Kandhakarnan is closely intertwined with that of Vasoorimala (വസൂരിമാല).

According to legend, after the death of Mahishasura (മഹിഷാസുരൻ), his wife Manodhari (മനോധരി) performed intense penance to please Shiva. Pleased with her devotion, Shiva appeared before her and left behind a few drops of his divine sweat. Seeking revenge against Bhadrakali (ഭദ്രകാളി) for slaying her husband, Manodhari cast these drops upon the goddess, causing painful sores (Vasoori – വസൂരി) to appear across her body.

To relieve Bhadrakali's suffering, Shiva manifested a fierce being from his throat (Kandham – കണ്ഠം), who emerged through his ear. This being was Kandhakarnan. He approached Bhadrakali and removed the sores by licking them away. However, when he attempted to remove the marks from her face, Bhadrakali stopped him, declaring that they shared a sacred sibling-like bond. The marks remained and came to be regarded as part of her divine appearance.

After recovering, Bhadrakali summoned Manodhari through Kandhakarnan. Repentant for her actions, Manodhari sought forgiveness. Bhadrakali pardoned her, bestowed upon her the name Vasoorimala (വസൂരിമാല), and granted her a place among her divine companions.

In the Theyyam traditions of North Malabar, Kandhakarnan is worshipped as a healer and protector who removes disease and suffering, while Vasoorimala is associated with epidemic illnesses and their divine governance. Together, they symbolize the interconnected forces of affliction and healing.
