Chekkippara Bhagavathy (ചെക്കിപ്പാറ ഭഗവതി) is worshipped as a powerful manifestation of Parammal Durga Bhagavathy (പാറമ്മൽ ദുർഗ്ഗാഭഗവതി) and is revered as a protector of the people and the land.

According to the traditional legend, Goddess Parvathi (പാർവതി) was once travelling through the heavens when she beheld the natural beauty of the Parammal (പാറമ്മൽ) region and the sight of Unnikannan (ഉണ്ണിക്കണ്ണൻ) joyfully tending cattle. Captivated by the beauty and serenity of the place, the goddess chose to reside there and came to be worshipped as Parammal Durga Bhagavathy.

In later times, when unrest, disease, and other misfortunes afflicted the regions of Klayikkode (ക്ലായിക്കോട്), Vellat (വെള്ളാട്ട്), and Mukkoom (മുക്കൂം), the local people sought refuge in Parammal Durga Bhagavathy. Moved by the prayers of her devotees, the goddess manifested a radiant divine form from her sacred forehead (Netram – നേത്രം), or third eye. Shining with the brilliance of the rising sun, this newly created goddess took her abode at Chekkippara (ചെക്കിപ്പാറ), near the Parammal temple, and became known as Chekkippara Bhagavathy. She is regarded as the daughter and manifestation of Parammal Durga Bhagavathy and is considered the principal protective deity of these regions.

Another local tradition identifies Chekkippara Bhagavathy as Asuranthaki (അസുരാന്തകി), a divine daughter of Lord Shiva (ശിവൻ), who descended to earth to protect the righteous and destroy evil. It is said that she was first sighted at Kannankara Chekkippara (കണ്ണങ്കര ചെക്കിപ്പാറ), from where she derived her name.

Cultural Significance

The most prominent aspect of Chekkippara Bhagavathy is her role as a kāval deivam (protector deity). The legend describes her emergence during a period of disease, unrest, and hardship affecting the regions of Klayikkode, Vellat, and Mukkoom. This positions the goddess as a divine protector who safeguards both the land and its people from misfortune, a common theme in Malabar's Bhagavathy traditions.
