The history of Cheriya Bhagavathy is closely connected with the origin legend of Kammadathamma.

When Dhandiyanghanathu Bhagavathy arrived at Kammadam, she was in an intensely fierce and wrathful form. It is this fierce manifestation that is worshipped as Cheriya Bhagavathy. Among the deities said to have emerged from the sacred Homa Kundam of Lord Mahadeva, Cheriya Bhagavathy is regarded as one of the most ferocious manifestations.

At the Kammadam Bhagavathy Temple, the tradition follows the principle of "one pedestal, two offerings", symbolizing the shared worship of Kammadathamma and Cheriya Bhagavathy. Because of this close association, most places where Kammadathamma is worshipped also feature a Theyyam form of Cheriya Bhagavathy.

Performance & Rituals

At the Kammadam temple, during the first three days of the festival, Cheriya Bhagavathy is performed in simple ritual attire through a sequence of appearances. During the final two days, however, she appears in her complete Theyyam form. Her appearance includes the Bhadra Chotta facial design, Vattamudi (circular headgear), Kuthu Pantham (ritual torch), and Arayoda (waist ornament). Her form is similar to that of Kakkara Bhagavathy and Dhooma Bhagavathy.

Cheriya Bhagavathy is known for an exceptionally fierce style of dance and performance. The complete Theyyam form (Muzhukkolam) can be seen only at Kammadam Temple and a few other select locations. In most other shrines, she appears in a simplified form, with red facial coloring, minimal ornaments, and a small ritual torch.

Cultural Significance

Despite the name Cheriya ("small"), the deity is revered as a powerful and intensely wrathful manifestation of the divine feminine, representing the fierce aspect of Kammadathamma before her transformation into a more benevolent mother goddess.
