Origin & Sacred Story

Karinkali is identified with Bhadrakali, the goddess who slew the demon Darika. According to local tradition, she was originally worshipped in the Padinjatta (western shrine) of the king of Chembakassery, near Ambalappuzha. The temple priest was a Brahmin from Attoli Illam in Kuruveli, near Payyanur.

When the priest decided to return to his ancestral home, the king presented him with a golden ritual vessel (kindi). Filling it with sacred water for his daily rites, he began his journey home. Unseen, the goddess herself accompanied him within the sacred vessel.

At Attoli Illam, a series of unusual omens occurred. A ritual divination (prashnam) revealed the presence of the goddess, and Karinkali was subsequently established there with a pedestal (peedham), shrine, and Theyyam tradition. She is worshipped here in her peaceful form, after the slaying of Darika.

Another tradition states that a young Brahmin from Kanayi Chetoor Illam later came to Attoli Illam to study the Vedas and temple rituals. Karinkali is believed to have accompanied him back to Chetoor Illam. There, however, she is worshipped in her fierce pre-battle form, just before departing to destroy Darika. As part of the ritual, a ceremonial destruction of Darika's fort is performed immediately before the Theyyam performer dons the Thirumudi (ritual crown).

Performance & Rituals

Karinkali Bhagavathy is traditionally performed by the Vannan community.

The Kondal Mudi headdress, decorated with fresh coconut fronds (kuruthola), is the distinctive crown. The performer wears a white waist garment (Velumpan Udduppu). The face painting follows the Ottachurul and Vairi Dhalam style.

Karinkali carries a Chedaka sword in one hand and the symbolic severed head of Darika in the other, representing her victory over the demon.
