Kshethrapalakan is revered as one of the foremost guardian deities in the Theyyam tradition of North Malabar. According to local legend, Damukhan, the son of the demon Mookasura, was a mighty asura whose strength was so great that even Parashurama was unable to defeat him. To destroy this formidable demon, Lord Shiva manifested Kalarathri from his divine third eye. Kalarathri slew Damukhan by severing his head, and from this fierce manifestation was born Kshethrapalakan, who is traditionally regarded as a son of Shiva.

Another important tradition associates Kshethrapalakan with the history of the Kolathiri Kingdom. When Kerala Varma of the Kolathiri dynasty marched to conquer the Allada Swarupam, Kshethrapalakan and Kalarathri Amma are believed to have arrived from the Nediyirippu Swarupam to aid him. During the conflict, Kshethrapalakan defeated the Eight Kudukka Chiefs (Ettu Kudukka Prabhukkal), enabling Kerala Varma to establish control over Alladam.

Following the victory, Kshethrapalakan became the guardian lord of Alladam, residing at the Udinur Kovilakam. Tradition further states that he later journeyed north and established himself at Madiyan Koolom, which remains one of his principal centres of worship.

Performance & Rituals

Kshethrapalakan Theyyam occupies a position of great ritual importance in the Theyyam calendar of the Alladam region. He is worshipped as the supreme guardian deity of the land and is performed in numerous sacred groves and ancestral shrines.

One of the most significant ritual occasions associated with Kshethrapalakan is the Perunkalasham conducted at Madiyan Koolom and Mannam Purath Kavu. This grand concluding ritual traditionally marks the end of the Theyyam season in Alladam, bringing the annual cycle of performances to a ceremonial close.

The Theyyam itself is renowned for its commanding presence, elaborate costume, imposing headgear, and dignified ritual performance, reflecting the deity's status as the protector and ruler of the sacred territory.

Cultural Significance

Kshethrapalakan is revered as the guardian deity (Kshetra Palaka) of temples, sacred groves, and the historic Allada Swarupam. His legends combine elements of Shaiva mythology with regional history, presenting him both as a divine warrior born from Kalarathri and as the protector who established order during the formation of the Kolathiri kingdom.

His close association with Kalarathri Amma, the history of Alladam, and the conclusion of the annual Theyyam season makes him one of the most important deities in North Malabar's ritual tradition. Devotees worship Kshethrapalakan seeking protection, justice, courage, and the safeguarding of their homes, communities, and sacred spaces.
