According to the traditional legend, the wife of the Rayaramangalam Adiyodi (അടിയോടി) belonged to the Narambil family, whose ancestral deity (Kuladevatha – കുലദേവത) was Narambil Bhagavathy (നരമ്പിൽ ഭഗവതി), a fierce form of Goddess Kali (കാളി). While pregnant, she wished to visit her maternal home, but her husband asked her to wait until the completion of the paddy harvest (Nelkkoythu – നെൽകൊയ്ത്ത്). Unwilling to postpone the visit, she continued to insist, leading to a heated argument.

In a moment of anger, Adiyodi struck his wife, causing her death. Grief-stricken, her mother prayed before Narambil Bhagavathy, seeking justice for her daughter. Moved by the sorrow and injustice suffered by her devotee, the goddess arose in her fierce form (Samhara Rudra Bhava – സംഹാര രുദ്രഭാവം) and set out toward Rayaramangalam.

As the enraged goddess advanced, the presiding deity of Rayaramangalam foresaw the destruction that her wrath might bring upon the land and its people. To avert this calamity, the goddess sought the assistance of Muchilottu Bhagavathy (മുച്ചിലോട്ട് ഭഗവതി), renowned for her wisdom and compassion.

Muchilottu Bhagavathy then assumed the form of Manjalamma (മാഞ്ഞാളമ്മ) and approached the furious Narambil Bhagavathy with words of comfort, reconciliation, and grace. Through her gentle intervention, the goddess was pacified, and peace was restored. From that time onward, Manjalamma came to be revered as a benevolent Mother Goddess who protects her devotees and guides them through hardships.
