Muchilottu Bhagavathy is believed to have been a brilliant young Brahmin girl born in Maniyottu Mana in the village of Perinchalloor, near Taliparamba in Kannur. By the age of twelve, she had mastered the Vedas and outshone male scholars in debate, earning great renown.

Jealous of her extraordinary wisdom, the elder teacher of Perinchalloor and his disciples devised a trap. They challenged her with questions about taboo subjects — asking what the greatest pain and greatest pleasure were — subjects that a Brahmin girl of her standing was forbidden to discuss. Caught in this trap and unable to answer without breaking tradition, she was publicly shamed and humiliated.

Unable to bear this dishonour, she took her own life. Through her martyrdom, she attained divine status and became Muchilottu Bhagavathy — a virgin goddess of extraordinary power. The first shrine raised in her name, the Adi Muchilottu Kavu, was established at Karivelloor in the 14th century, on the very ground associated with her. Today, the Valiyachan (chief authority) of Karivelloor holds final ritual jurisdiction over all 113+ Muchilottu Kavus that have spread from Peruthana in Kasaragod to Vadakara in Kozhikode.
