Puthiya Bhagavathy is a Naatu Paradevatha (guardian deity of the land) who is well-known throughout Kolathunadu. Her Theyyam is considered one of the most demanding and difficult kolams to perform, and therefore only artists with great experience and skill undertake this kolam.

According to legend, when Cheermba Devi spread the terrible epidemic known as Vasoori (smallpox) throughout the world, Mahadeva (Lord Shiva) created a radiant goddess from the sacred fire of a Homa (fire ritual) in order to bring the disease under control. This divine goddess, identified as Annapurneswari, appeared adorned with four blazing crowns/flames (deepitha kolam) and completely eradicated the epidemic. After accomplishing her mission, she came to reside at Villapuram.

This story is clearly narrated in the Thottam Pattu (ritual origin song) of Puthiya Bhagavathy.

The principal seat (Aroodhasthanam) of the goddess is believed to be at Mathoth, near Kanhangad.
